The West Jersey Pioneer newspaper, published in Bridgeton, New Jersey, was one of the premier newspapers in Cumberland County. The "Pioneer," in its life under preceding titles, actually started on September 2, 1846 as the West Jersey Telegraph and General Advertiser. It published fifty-two issues from September 2, 1846 and ceased operations on August 25, 1847. It then became The West Jersey Telegraph and Cumberland and Cape May Advertiser. This paper began on September 1, 1847 and published only twenty-six issues, ceasing operations with its February 26, 1848 publication. The paper's name changed again, now becoming The West Jersey Pioneer and Cumberland and Cape May Advertiser, which began publication on March 1, 1848, under Franklin Ferguson. Sometime between February 1851 and May 28, 1851, the paper changed its name again to become The West Jersey Pioneer. This information can be found in Volume One. Volume Two of the planned series of five volumes contains the information from the years 1855 thru 1858. Every known copy of the West Jersey Pioneer has been examined for the information found here.
