Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can be defined as a metabolic disorder of various aetiologies characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia and comorbidities resulting from carbohydrate metabolism; it is characterised by dysfunction in insulin action and secretion. Models and scores to predict the development of type 2 diabetes have been developed based on classic risk factors such as age, sex, obesity, metabolic and lifestyle factors, family history of diabetes, and ethnicity. After identifying the risk factors for T2DM, the aetiology and relationship of these risk factors with the development of T2DM, as well as the uniqueness of the individual, make it possible to intervene in a systematic way in those factors that are subject to change.
