This is the story of how Jews from Lithuania, particularly from the Krottingen area, chose to remake their community in Sunderland in the North East of England. They were impoverished, without homes and didn't speak English but they remained an Orthodox community in a strange country. It seems that secular success and the demands of total Jewish observance should be an impossible combination. The Sunderland Beth Hamedresh proved that this was not inevitable. The congregation became famous wherever observant Jews gathered and their story is inspiring.
