The Heartbreak of Alzheimer's is a true account of how Alzheimer's disease affected the author's husband, his family and friends. It describes the first noticeable symptoms and, as the disease progressed, the gradual deterioration of his cognitive skills. It relates how the disease was diagnosed in February, 1996; how the family coped with it, and the heart-wrenching decision to place him in a care center in May, 2001. The author relates how he was sent to a psychiatric hospital in Marietta for treatment and five days later she received an affidavit from the Washington County Court stating that a hearing would be held to determine if he were mentally ill. She tells how, with the support of family members, she resolved this issue and brought him back to a care center near his home. The author compiled this book from notes which she recorded during her husband's illness and it is hoped that information in this book will be helpful to others who also may be experiencing similar situations with loved ones. The book also includes a list of suggestions for the caregiver.
