The 53rd Nebraska Symposium on Motivation developed under the past Series Editor, Richard A. Dienstbier. Prof. Dienstbier oversaw the symposium for many years and he is largely responsible for its continued success. His broad and thoughtful view of the field of psychology has guided the symposium into the twenty-first century. Everyone connected to the symposium is extremely grateful for his leadership. With his retirement, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Department of Psychology developed a new administrative structure for oversight of the symposium and selected Debra A. Hope as the new series editor for a 6-year term. Publication of the 53rd volume has fallen under Prof. Hope s watch. As the new series editor, one of the first tasks that the symposium committee and I undertook was to evaluate the current needs of the symposium. As a result, we began an extended process to find a new publisher for the symposium volumes who would respect and support the intellectual freedom and rigor of the series as well as promote it broadly in traditional print and electronic formats. We are very pleased that Springer has agreed to be our publisher, starting with Volume 53. The volume editor for this 53rd volume of the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation is Cynthia Willis-Esqueda. The volume editor coordinated the sym- sium that led to this volume including selecting and inviting the contributors and coordinating all aspects of editing. My thanks to our contributors for excellent presentations and chapters."

Introduction: Motivational Aspects of Prejudice and Racism.- Social Cognition, Ethnic Identity, and Ethnic Specific Strategies for Coping with Threat due to Prejudice and Discrimination.- New Directions in Aversive Racism Research: Persistence and Pervasiveness.- The Role of Race and Racial Prejudice in Recognizing Other People.- Addressing Contemporary Racism: The Common Ingroup Identity Model.

The study of prejudice and racism is one of the oldest interests of social psychology and continues as a major area of interest in the social sciences, in general. This is the first volume in the well-renowned book series Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, which is the longest running symposium series in psychology. Contributing authors are leading scholars who are at the forefront of research on the motivational aspects of prejudice and racism and the impact of such forces on the targets of racial bias. Currently, there has been renewed interest in the motivational aspects of prejudice and racism. The topic of racism and prejudice continues to be a significant issue for researchers and policymakers not just in the United States, but in the rest of the world as well.

Motivational Aspects of Prejudice and Racism examines the cognitive processes as well as the motivational forces that create and sustain social hierarchies based on racial categories. A panel of top scholars analyzes the subtle and explicit manifestations of bias within and across racial groups, while refuting the idea that race has lost its power as a social concept.

Chapter authors review the evolution of the psychological understanding of racism and its effects, pinpoint emerging trends in racism research, and illuminate the experience of prejudice from minority group members’ perspectives. Well-known psychosocial phenomena as the cross-race identification effect, social identity, and majority culture members' conflicting attitudes regarding race, are explored, with the underlying ideologies that nurture them. The volume concludes with a realistic assessment of the future, and possible elimination, of racism. Readers are challenged to re-think self and social identities and self-concepts—particularly relevant ideas as America grows more diverse, and potentially more divided.

Highlights of the coverage:

  • The role of race—and of racism—in recognizing others.
  • Improved methods of studying racism, prejudice, and interracial contact.
  • Prejudice as experienced by its perpetrators and its targets.
  • Ethnic-specific strategies for responding to and coping with prejudice.
  • Perceptions of racism and identity among Mexican Americans.
  • Toward eradicating prejudice: the common in-group identity model.

Motivational Aspects of Prejudice and Racism fills critical knowledge gaps on many fronts, and is vital reading for researchers in motivation and cognition, social and clinical psychologists, and policymakers. Its authors cogently address issues that affect our everyday lives, and anticipate the long term.
