Noyes, Rev. Eli, D. D., was born in Jefferson, Me., and was converted when ten years of age. He was connected with the Calvinistic Baptists until 1834. In January, 1835, he offered himself as a candidate for service as a missionary. He married Miss Clementina Pierce, daughter of Nathaniel S. Pierce, of Portsmouth, N. H., in May, was ordained in June at the session of the New Hampshire Y. M., and September 22 of the same year set sail for India in company with Amos Sutton and Jeremiah Phillips. Arriving in Calcutta, Feb. 4, 1836, he entered upon the work in Orissa, made rapid progress in the language until attacks of dysentery compelled his retirement in 1841, his wife also suffering much from the climate. Brother Noyes engaged with success in raising funds for the Foreign Mission Society, and was made a member of its executive board. Later he served as Pastor in Hallowell, Me., Boston, Mass., North Scituate and Providence, R. I. As pastor of the Roger Williams church his labors were for a time very useful. In 1848 he with Rev. J. Woodman visited the General Baptists in England by appointment of the General Conference.
