Human rights and conflict resolution have been traditionally perceived as two separate fields, sometimes in competition or in tension and occasionally with contradictory approaches towards achieving conflict transformation and enduring peace. Although human rights norms have been incorporated and institutionalized by various national, regional and international organizations that deal with conflict resolution, in practice, negotiators are often pressured to overlook international human rights principles in favor of compliance and more immediate outcomes. Academic work considering the relationship between these two fields is limited. Three gaps in the literature are of special concern. First, lack of conceptual and analytical frameworks connecting the two fields. Second, the existing literature fails to address how these two fields have been integrated into the normative and practical work of international institutions. The third gap concerns the empirical dimensions and lessons learned from attempts to integrate human-rights perspectives into peace related efforts. Recognizing the increasing relevance of this debate and the current research gaps, the proposed volume aims to critically address the following questions:
