Functional Metabolism of Cells is the first comprehensive survey of metabolism, offering an in-depth examination of metabolism and regulation of carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids. It provides a basic background on metabolic regulation and adaptation as well as the chemical logic of metabolism, and covers the interrelationship of metabolism to life processes of the whole organism. The book lays out a structured approach to the metabolic basis of disease, including discussion of the normal pathways of metabolism, altered pathways leading to disease, and use of molecular genetics in diagnosis and treatment of disease. It also takes a unique comparative approach in which human metabolism is a reference for metabolism in microorganisms and plant design, and presents novel coverage of development and aging, and human health and animal adaptation. The final chapter reviews the past and future promise of new genetic approaches to treatment and bioinformatics.
This, the most exhaustive treatment of metabolism currently available, is a useful text for advanced undergraduates and graduates in biochemistry, cell/molecular biology, and biomedicine, as well as biochemistry instructors and investigators in related fields.

Ken Storey?is a Professor in the Institute of Biochemistry at Carleton University and holds the Canada Research Chair in Molecular Physiology. His research focuses on the molecular adaptations that permit animals to survive severe environmental stresses and his work has explored the many intriguing ways that animals alter their metabolism, modify enzyme function, and regulate gene expression to endure deep cold, oxygen deprivation and water restriction, or meet the multiple demands of muscle exercise metabolism. The author of over 450 research publications and the editor of 5 other books, Dr. Storey has lectured on biochemical adaptation on every continent and has done research in places as diverse as the Amazon jungle and the Antarctic ice shelf. He has received multiple fellowships and awards and is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

In the post–genome era, questions concerning gene products, enzymes, and metabolism are returning to the forefront of life science research. Genetic information on its own does not fully account for an enzyme’s kinetic and regulatory properties or for the behavior of the enzymes within its particular cellular milieu. Unanswered questions about the regulation, integration, and adaptation of metabolism have led to a resurgence of interest in protein, enzymological, and metabolic research for understanding biological processes.

Functional Metabolism: Regulation and Adaptation provides a comprehensive survey of metabolism. It includes an in–depth examination of the regulation of carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acids, and approaches to the study of enzyme regulation, signal transduction, and control of transcription and translation. The contributors an internationally recognized group of researchers also cover:

  • The metabolic basis of diabetes, obesity, and blood disorders
  • Oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses in health and disease
  • Novel perspectives on biochemical adaptation to environmental stress
  • Application of metabolic knowledge to developments in organ preservation and understanding the origin of life

From the basics of metabolic regulation and adaptation to the latest relevant advances in the genetic, proteomic, and enzymatic basis of how cells regulate their functions, Functional Metabolism: Regulation and Adaptation offers the most exhaustive treatment of the subject currently available. It is an essential text for students and practitioners in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and biomedicine.
