In recent years there has been an increasing call for universities to take a leading role in education for sustainability, to ensure a more sustainable future for our society. Education is globally recognized as a critical platform that allows all sectors of society to learn, manage change and transition to sustainable practices in all areas. The role of the formal education sector, in partnership with the community, is increasingly emphasized as a key player in facilitating the education of the society to respond to growing challenges generated by the environmental and social components of sustainable development. In addition, there is an expectation from the society that universities play an important role in facilitating education that allows current and future generations to redesign their activities, both personal and professional, to create a sustainable future. The research underlying this work sought to find answers to the overarching questions: "How should the sustainable university look like?" and "What should a university do in order to become sustainable?"
