My book is about biomimetic materials used in conservative dentistry and endodontics which is a branch of dental sciences. A material formed by biomimetic technique based on the natural process found in biological system is called a biomimetic material. Biomimetic material should match the part of the tooth that it is replacing in several ways including the modulus of elasticity and function of the respective areas (eg. Pulp, dentin, enamel, dentoenamel junction). It also implies that the biomimetic material will be biocompatible ie biologically acceptable and be not rejected by adjacent vital tissue following the placement. The overall goal of biomimetic research is to enable clinicians to replace lost tissue using a more natural, biologically compatible approach so that they are not introducing foreign materials into the human body. Therefore a biomimetic approach to dentistry would mean esthetic and functional materials similar to the natural tooth.
