This book is undertaken from applying metal oxide in glass art, inspired by the shade of ink of Chinese calligraphy through an art-based research project. It focus on the historical and technical contexts of applying metal oxides. It set out to explore this idea through the research question: how might metal oxides be used in glass to emulate the ink shade of Chinese calligraphy for creative expression? It was believed that several glass making methods could be combined with oxides to create innovative effects. It has analyzed the current statues of contemporary calligraphy in China, and at the same time surveyed examples that relates to glass calligraphy. It also includes the development of the personal glass art practice of the researcher, which used glass and metal oxides. This project also focus on how an artist today might use the techniques of metal oxides with glass to develop contemporary Chinese glass calligraphy art. It is expected that this research will boost the development of traditional calligraphy to form a model of contemporary calligraphy. Finally, all the artworks provide different perspectives on the idea that 'Chinese calligraphy is life'.
